Hundreds of households left without power as fierce winds lash the country

A few hundred households have been blacked out by the power of Nature this morning.

Gusts of up to 100km/h have damaged the electrical grid at several sites across the country.

An orange weather warning remains in place, with particular attention to Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Sligo and Clare.

Over 900 people in Carrowbeg near Westport in Galway are without electricity. Also, localized damage has occurred in Glenties, Ardnaree, Ennistymon, Ballybunion, Ross Carbery, Bray and Manorhamilton.

Some showers of rain and hail are also predicted today, with ongoing risk of sleet and snow on higher ground, especially in parts of Connacht and Ulster.
