Hundreds of Irish farmers protest European Union provision that could “destroy Ireland’s beef industry”

There’s a long running joke that farmers in Ireland are only happy when they’re complaining and giving out about something, but not this time – it appears as though they have legitimate concerns as to the future of their livelihoods.

Farmers congregated outside the Dail yesterday evening in an effort to stop proposed EU directives that would allow the European Union trade with the likes of South America – effectively opening up a whole new much cheaper market to import beef from.

Argentinian beef is notorious for its value for money and reportedly tastes very similar to Irish beef, even if it isn’t up to our standard.

Farmers claim that the proposed deal is directed towards European car manufacturers so that they can sell into cheaper markets, while farmers here and in the UK will get the rough end of the deal.
