“If only it was a Mosque” – Gym owner and goers fined for breaching lockdown for sake of mental health

A Donegal gym owner is being hit with a €2,500 fine for opening his business on what he said are health grounds.

The Donegal Daily reported that Buncrana gym owner, Ivor Farrelly, opened Limitless Gym and Fitness in early December but after someone informed on them to the Gardai they were hit with the €2,500 fine while four gym goers were also fined €100 each for breaching the lockdown restrictions.

The Donegal Daily reported that Mr Farrelly opened the gym after numerous people had pleaded with him to do so as they felt their mental health was in jeopardy without the healthy outlet.

The government’s decision to force gyms to close has compounded the mental health crisis hitting the country with depression, self-harm and suicide continuing to rise, the government continues to allow off licences to remain open, so citizens have an alternative coping mechanism.
