Tánaiste Simon Harris, pictured above at Pride, and EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič held a phone conversation to review the most recent progress in the ongoing EU-US trade negotiations, reports RTE.
During the call, both reaffirmed their shared commitment to wrapping up talks quickly and securing an agreement in principle that delivers mutual benefits for both the EU and the US.
The discussion also covered concerns in the pharmaceutical sector, as they acknowledged that ongoing uncertainty remains over the outcomes of current Section 232 investigations, including those affecting pharma, reports RTE.
In a public statement, the Tánaiste highlighted that this sector is of particular concern for Ireland, and noted that the Commissioner agreed on the need for continued cooperation on these matters in the weeks ahead.
“The Tánaiste remains of the view that the continued uncertainty is bad for economic confidence and Irish businesses seeking clarity on the trading environment in which they operate,” the statement said, reports RTE.
“However it remains his hope that both sides can work intensively and constructively to bring about, as soon as possible, a framework agreement, which would provide a base for continuing work,” reports RTE.
