Imagine if this was your holiday plane -Dozens of climate activists thugs block jets from taking off at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam

On Saturday, more than 100 environmental activists dressed in white robes stormed an area where private planes are located at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport and prevented several planes from sitting in front of their wheels.

The protest was part of a day of demonstrations in and around the airport organized by environmental groups Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion to protest greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution caused by the airport and the aviation industry.

No commercial flight delays have been reported since the afternoon.

“We want fewer flights, more trains and a ban on unnecessary short-haul flights and private jets,” said Greenpeace Netherlands campaign leader Dewi Zloch, reports Independent.

The environmental group says that Schiphol is the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the Netherlands, emitting 12 billion kilograms per year.

Hundreds of other protesters in and around the airport’s main hall carried signs reading “Restrict Aviation” and “More Trains.”

In response to the protest, Schiphol said it aims to become an emission-free airport by 2030 and supports the aviation industry’s goals of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The military police in charge of airport security said in a statement that they had “made a number of detentions of persons who were on airport property without being allowed”, reports Independent.

The Dutch government announced plans in June to limit annual passenger numbers at the airport to 440,000, about 11% below 2019 levels, citing air pollution and climate concerns.

Transport Minister Mark Harbers told parliament last month that his office cannot control the growing private jet traffic and that the government is considering including the issue in its climate policy.
