Independent Ireland ‘not far right’ claims former RTE news correspondent and election candidate Ciaran Mullooly

Director General Kevin Bakhurst has been questioned about whether he is the appropriate “person to deal with a government on his back before they hand over a cheque” by former RTÉ Midlands Correspondent Ciaran Mullooly, reports The Mirror.

The Independent Ireland candidate for Midlands-North-West, who challenged Ryan Tubridy for earning more than his publicly disclosed pay, told the Irish Mirror that he is “seriously concerned about RTÉ’s future going forward.”

In an extensive interview, Mr. Mullooly discussed his reasons for entering politics, the “not far right” stance of his party, and the variety of other parties that attempted to get his name on the ballot, reports The Mirror.

2021 saw Mr. Mullooly depart RTÉ after taking a package of layoffs. since the broadcaster’s financial issue became public knowledge last summer.

“I said at all stages Kevin Bakhurst was the right man in the right place coming into RTÉ in that he was coming from the model of the television licence. It’s going away from that now,” he explained.

“The [Media] Minister [Catherine Martin] says she’s not [in favour of it and prefers direct Exchequer funding],” he added, reports The Mirror.
