Infamous jewel thief Doris Payne arrested once again for earring heist, despite claiming retirement

Doris Payne, a notorious international jewel thief has been arrested for the burglary of a $690 pair of earrings from an upmarket department store in Atlanta.

According to a police report, the 85 year old was caught thieving a pair of Christian Dior earrings from a Saks Fifth Avenue shop on Friday.

Ten years ago Payne claimed she was finished with her life of crime that once saw her on a wanted list in two continents.-tdsbrd09-05-2014desertsun1a00620140904img-tdsbrd03-29-2014d11

Back in 2013 she again claimed to “retire” after several arrests since her first attempt at hanging up her boots.

Payne is no stranger to the media having given several interviews regarding her exploits.

She is said to have committed countless thefts over a span of six decades in both North America and Europe.

Her crime spree was first caught when she was 23 after leaving a jewellery shop in Pittsburgh with a diamond valued at $22,000, she stated to The Association Press in 2005.

She now is charged with theft by shoplifting and was taken to Fulton County jail. She is also wanted on a warrant for a similar charge in Mecklenberg County, North Carolina, and will face extradition, police said.

Shawn McCullers is the defence lawyer for Payne and says his client has serious health concerns that need to be recognised though he did not elaborate.

Police believe that over the years, it is almost certain that Payne got away with many more burglaries than she was caught.
