Information campaign to be launched after new figures reveals there is a low uptake in those seeking paternity leave

The Department of Social Protection have said they will organise an information campaign that will inform more fathers about the option to take paid paternity leave.

It is understood the proposed informative campaign which will be specifically targeted at working fathers will cone after latest figures revealed that only 20,000 men opted to take up the scheme even there was 60,000 births recorded since it was introduced last September.

Speaking to RTÉ’s Drivetime, the social protection minister Regina Doherty said more and more fathers should be given information about the scheme that allows them to take two weeks paid leave in order to spend time with their newborn child.

Ms Doherty said fathers should consider undertaking the scheme which pays €235 per week as it is crucial to spend time and bond with their baby.

However the Meath East TD did say she was fully aware that the scheme is not mandatory nor should it be as it is ultimately a parents choice whether or not they choose take time off from work once their child is born.
