Authorities say a rhino attacked a couple working as animal caretakers in Austria, killing the woman and seriously injuring the man as they tried to save her, reports Breaking News.

The attack took place at Heilbrunn Zoo in Salzburg, in the west of the country.

Zoo director Sabine Graebner told reporters on Tuesday that a 33-year-old German national from Bavaria was tasked with applying insect repellent to the rhinos that day because they are very sensitive to insect bites.

A 30-year-old female rhino attacked the JT goalkeeper, although it is not clear why, Austrian news agency APA quoted Ms Graebner as saying.

Police in Salzburg said that ““the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the accident,” reports Breaking News.

Another zookeeper, a 34-year-old Austrian national who was feeding other animals at the time, was attacked and injured when he tried to pull the rhino away from his wife.

As reported by APA news agency, the attack left the woman with severe chest injuries and died in the pen, while her husband was taken to hospital with a broken leg.

The names of the two animal handlers have not been released in accordance with Austrian privacy laws.

The man is a trained zookeeper, working at the zoo since 2008 and his wife – a certified zookeeper – since 2014, reports Breaking News.

She previously worked in Munich, Graebner said.
