
GardaĆ are probing an assault on a member of staff at the Accident and Emergency Department of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, reports The Mirror.
The incident took place in the early hours of last Monday morning when the A&E unit was crowded with patients, reports The Mirror.
While the injured staff member did not sustain serious injuries, medical personnel have been left outraged and shaken by what happened.
This marks the second suspected assault reported in recent weeks, reports The Mirror.

During the previous event, a nurse and a cleaner were allegedly attacked by a patient experiencing psychiatric difficulties.
A hospital employee said: āOur 24 hour security has been restored to A&E but we are constantly worried about our safety, reports The Mirror.
āIt is hard enough to do this job without patients getting angry and then turning on us.ā
The Lourdes Hospital A&E department has been overwhelmed with patients over the past week due to the winter flu outbreak, reports The Mirror.
The Health Service Executive has released a public notice urging people to avoid attending Lourdes Hospital, which serves the North-East, unless their condition is life-threatening.
In a statement, the GardaĆ said: āGardai received a report of an assault at a premises in Moneymore, Drogheda , Co Louth which occurred at 1.25am on 9th February, 2026, reports The Mirror.
āNo arrests have been made at this time and and enquiries are ongoing.ā
Round-the-clock security at the Lourdes accident and emergency unit had been reduced to 12 daytime hours last autumn due to budget constraints.
However, it was reinstated after the most recent violent episode a few weeks ago, reports The Mirror.
