Investigation underway after man (70) dies following assault in Donegal

A 70-yr-old man who was attacked at his home in Co Donegal earlier this week has died in hospital, reports RTE.

Derek Barnes died at University Hospital Letterkenny last night after the incident at his home in Carrickquoil, Dwar Big, Gaoth Dovair, on Sunday morning.

Mr Barnes was treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

His grandson, Derek Mulligan, appeared in court accused of his involvement in the incident, reports RTE.

The 36-year-old initially appeared at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court last evening.

He was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent or recklessly to Derek Burns on December 17, 2023, at Carrickcoil, Dwar Beg, Gaoth Dovair, An Clochan Liath district.

The charge is contrary to Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offenses Act 1997, reports RTE.

The 36-year-old man faces a total of five charges, Judge Alan Mitchell was told.

Detective Garda Paul Dolan provided evidence to support the arrest and prosecution of the accused.
