A man who was seriously injured in an accident at work at Stryker’s medical equipment factory in Carrigtwohill, Cork two months ago has died.

John Murphy, 41, suffered severe burns in an incident on April 18 while working at the Anngrove plant.

“We are deeply saddened by the news that our Apleona colleague, John Murphy, has passed away. John was a friend to many, as well as a valued colleague, and our sympathies and thoughts are with John’s family and everyone who knew him,” a spokesperson for Stryker said, reports RTE.

The Health and Safety Agency confirmed that it had been informed of the developments.

He said the investigation into the accident, which had already been launched, would continue.

“Our members wish to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Mr Murphy. He has been in the thoughts of our members since the serious accident at the Stryker plant last month in which he and a colleague where injured,” said SIPTU organizer Allen Dillon, reports RTE.

Mr Dillon said the outcome of the HSA investigation was awaited.

He added that representatives of SIPTU had repeatedly sought talks with the management of the Stryker plant in Carrigtwohill.

Stryker, which employs around 4,000 people across six locations in Cork, established a branch in the county in 1998.

Cork is the centre of Stryker’s manufacturing, supply chain and R&D, reports RTE.

The company also has offices in Belfast and Limerick.
