Investigation underway after remains of Irishman gets accidentally left on plane at Dublin Airport and sent back to Greece

The remains of an Irish national who died abroad were accidentally left on a plane at Dublin Airport and flown back to Greece, causing grief to his family and sparking an internal investigation at the airport, reports Independent.

Ground services failed to remove the man’s coffin from a flight out of Greece on May 22, according to the Sunday Independent.

His family were waiting with a hearse at the airport, but the “misload” meant the coffin was not discovered and removed as planned, and was returned to Greece on the plane.

After being informed of the mistake, the family of the deceased had no choice but to return home and reorganize their funeral, reports Independent.

The responsible handling company endeavored to rectify the problem as quickly as possible.

It arranged repatriation with another airline, which returned the remains the following day.

The company said in a statement: “We are deeply sorry for the family’s experience at such a difficult time and did everything we could to ensure things were resolved as quickly as possible. We are now conducting an urgent investigation to make sure lessons are learned,” reports Independent.
