Investigation underway after top Putin critic allegedly gets poisoned in Russia

Outspoken Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is in critical condition after a suspected poisoning.

According to the BBC, he became ill during a flight to Moscow and was rushed to hospital after an emergency landing. His spokeswoman has told the press they believe something was slipped into his tea.

Navalny has long been a staunch critic of Vladimir Putin, particularly his recent constitutional reforms which allow him to remain in office for two more terms. The Kremlin wished him a ‘speedy recovery’ in a statement.

UK Home Secretary Dominic Raab is quoted by the BBC as being ‘deeply concerned’ with allegations of poisoning. Putin’s government has been accused in the past of assassinating political rivals and critics.

Perhaps the most famous case was that of Alexander Litvinenko, a former spy who defected to Britain and was fatally poisoned with a radioactive substance in a London sushi bar in 2006.
