Two staff members in the Accident and Emergency Department at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda sustained minor injuries, including bruising, following an assault by a hospital in-patient last weekend.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning around 11am, when the assailant allegedly attempted to choke a male nurse and a cleaning staff member. The attacker was subsequently restrained and sedated by medical staff, and a door was damaged during the victims’ attempts to defend themselves, reports DroghedaLife.com
Both injured workers received treatment at the hospital but did not require admission. The event left colleagues and witnesses deeply shaken.
Local Sinn Féin councillor Debbie McCole, a paramedic who works in the department, condemned the assault as deeply distressing and traumatic, emphasizing that violence toward healthcare workers is completely unacceptable. Several staff members contacted her to express serious concerns about safety.
The HSE declined to comment on individual cases or patient care. Notably, 24-hour security has recently been reinstated in the A&E department after a previous reduction during certain hours.
