Gardai were forced to intervene after privately hired “security men” armed with baseball bats stormed a building on Prussia Street in Stoneybatter at around 6:30am to evict squatters.
The altercation between housing activists and residents of the “Sunnyvale social centre” then spread onto the street outside causing major disruption to traffic on Prussia Street.
One of the activists spoke to Dublin Live saying:
Dublin Live: “At about 6:30 this morning armed private security wearing balaclavas who would not identify themselves or show us any kind of eviction notice broke down our doors with baseball bats and came in and violently evicted us.
“They assaulted most of us. I think everyone got hit by baseball bats, one quite badly and had to go to hospital.
“We were forced out on to the street and were basically brawling with them when the guards showed up…we’ve been standing out here ever since resisting.
After a standoff for several hours which saw residents joined by other supporters the security men left the building on Wednesday afternoon and the building was re-occupied by the squatters who said that the interior had been badly damaged.
