A swimmer has died in Sydney’s first fatal shark attack in nearly 60 years, authorities confirm.

Emergency services were called around 4:35pm local time in Buchan Point, Malabar on Wednesday after reports of an attack in which the victim suffered catastrophic injuries.

Witnesses told local television they saw the attack on a swimmer wearing a wetsuit. It was the first deadly shark attack in Sydney since 1963, the data shows.

“Some guy was swimming and a shark came and attacked him vertically,” witness Kris Linto told Nine News.

“We heard a yell and turned around – it looked like a car had landed in the water.”

Another witness estimated the shark to be 15 feet long.

Police did not reveal the identity of the swimmer.
