A 41-yr-old man was sentenced to 13 years in prison for repeatedly raping and abusing his wife, which resulted in her miscarriage, reports RTE.
When the lady and her sister attempted to recoup her “bride price” and ended the marriage, the Nigerian man was also convicted for threatening to murder or seriously hurt them both.
The victim’s brother had been struggling to obtain European residence, therefore the court heard that a plot had been hatched to include his name on the birth certificate of the child she had with the accused, reports RTE.
According to what the court heard, the accused was pleased to comply with that arrangement and thereafter moved to Ireland to live with her and her child.
All parties engaged were from the same area of Nigeria. In order to get residence in Ireland, the man pressured his wife into telling the police that she had registered their child’s birth certificate under a different name.
A jury in Wexford in August convicted the man—who will not be identified to protect the identity of his ex-wife—guilty of eight charges of rape, four counts of assault, and two counts of threatening to murder or seriously damage someone, reports RTE.
The court heard that during the six-year marriage, he was repeatedly raped and humiliated, but he still denies any wrongdoing.
The victim moved to Ireland to live with her sister, Detective Garda Patricia Lonergan said the court.
In her victim impact statements, which Det Gda Lonergan delivered to the court, the 28-year-old lady referred to herself as a walking corpse and a survivor of domestic abuse.
“What was done to me I would not wish on my worst enemy,” she said, reports RTE.
“It is only by the grace of God did I not kill myself,” she added, reports RTE.
She said: “Truly it felt like no one cared and I could not save myself because of the blackmail,” reports RTE.
