Ireland snow update: Met Eireann delivers dismal white Christmas update as very unsettled weather on the way

Storm Bram has passed, and now weather enthusiasts are shifting their attention to whether Ireland might see a white Christmas.

Snowy Christmases are uncommon in Ireland. The last truly white Christmas was 15 years ago in 2010, when the whole country lay under a deep layer of snow, reports The Mirror.

There’s disappointing news for Christmas shoppers, as the outlook for the week before the holiday points to unsettled conditions. Wet and windy spells are predicted, with Met Éireann saying rainfall totals for that period will be “well above normal across the country”.

The forecast for Christmas week itself is being classed as “mixed”, and Met Éireann has given a gloomy assessment of the chances of snow this year, reports The Mirror.

Bookmakers currently offer odds of 6/1 on snow falling at Dublin Airport on Christmas Day, and judging by Met Éireann’s extended outlook, the reasoning is clear.

For many this will be unwelcome news, but snowfall around Christmas Day 2025 is considered very unlikely. Although conditions will be unsettled and wet, temperatures do not appear low enough for snow, reports The Mirror.

“At forecast Week 2 (December 22 to 28) and towards the latter part of December, the weather over Ireland is forecast to be mixed. The very unsettled weather of the preceding week is likely to give way to more changeable conditions with dry periods interspersed with wetter spells,”

“Rainfall totals during the week are forecast to be around the seasonal norm. Mean air temperatures are likely to trend near the climatological average,” said Met Eireann, reports The Mirror.

**Week 1 (Monday 15 December to Sunday 21 December)**

It looks likely to be an unsettled stretch with low pressure systems dominating Ireland’s weather and bringing periods of wind and rain. Rainfall totals are expected to be well above average nationwide. Temperatures are forecast to sit above the seasonal norm, reports The Mirror.

**Week 2 (Monday 22 December to Sunday 28 December)**

In Week 2 and moving into late December, conditions are expected to be mixed. The very unsettled weather of the previous week should transition to more variable spells with both dry phases and wetter periods. Rainfall is predicted to be close to the seasonal average, and mean temperatures are expected to remain near normal, reports The Mirror.

**Week 3 (Monday 29 December to Sunday 04 January)**

The end of December and start of January are forecast to see more high pressure influence than earlier weeks. Precipitation totals should fall below average, while temperatures are forecast to hover around normal levels, reports The Mirror.

**Week 4 (Monday 05 January to Sunday 11 January)**

There is little clear trend for Week 4, with equal chances of calm or unsettled conditions. Temperature forecasts show no particular signal, with equal likelihood of milder or colder weather, and no strong trend expected in rainfall totals, reports The Mirror.
