Ireland to hold yet another referendum this October on removal of two more articles from the Constitution

Ireland is going to hold two more referenda on the removal of articles from the constitution before the end of the year.

These referenda will be held in October on the same day as the potential Presidential election, if there is one.

The referenda will be on removal of articles 41.2 on the role and rights of women and 40.6.1 on blasphemy.

Article 41.2 stipulates that the state must ensure the economic necessities of mothers must be met so as they can provide care to their children at home, this article is one of founding principles of Ireland’s Children’s allowance social protection regime.

Article 40.6.1, Ireland’s much touted but almost never enforced “Blasphemy Law” has been given significant media attention in previous years.

Meanwhile, progressive activists have also called for the removal of the Preamble to Bunreacht na hÉireann, the Irish constitution, as it acknowledges the Holy Trinity as the ultimate source of authority and the divinity of Jesus Christ.
