Ireland weather warning: ‘Snow bomb’ prediction as Met Eireann gives date of freezing ‘airmass change’

Ireland could anticipate a “change of airmass” in a few days, according to Met Eireann, with extremely low temperatures, reports The Mirror.

The precise date that snow is expected to return has been announced by the national forecaster, and weather maps that ominously depict a lot of the nation buried in snow appear to confirm the forecast.

It comes amid conjecture from certain weather enthusiasts on the possible arrival of a “snow bomb.” Although not a phrase used in meteorology, the term “snow bomb” is used colloquially to characterise a weather event where a substantial amount of snowfall is predicted over a short period of time, reports The Mirror.

Although Met Eireann has indicated that next week would bring cooler temperatures, it has not yet predicted any significant snowfall. Alternatively, it predicts “wintry showers” on Thursday when a “change of airmass sets in” for certain locations.

According to the forecasts, there will be occasional drops below freezing throughout the night, and “an added wind chill factor” will make daytime temperatures in the single digits feel colder.

Giving a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect, the national forecaster said: “Sunday will be a mostly cloudy day with outbreaks of rain and drizzle affecting much of the southern half of the country. Mist and patchy frost across the North. It will be wettest across southern counties with spot flooding, and windy along the South Coast with onshore winds, as well as a slow clearance across these parts. Some bright or sunny spells will develop through the afternoon, as rain and drizzle pushes away southwards. Cool and breezy with highest temperatures of 6C to 9C in a mostly moderate to fresh northeast breeze,” reports The Mirror.
