The Taoiseach has stated that Ireland will raise its financial commitments to Ukraine, reports Breaking News.

Micheál Martin made the pledge to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday during an allies’ meeting in Kyiv.

Following Donald Trump’s stunning rhetorical assault on Mr. Zelensky last week, the meeting takes place on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and in the midst of strained US-European ties, reports Breaking News.

The US president seemed to blame Ukraine for initiating the war and referred to the country’s government as a “dictator.”

Speaking via video link from Dublin at the Support Ukraine conference, Mr. Martin stated that the preservation of the rules-based international order and Ukraine’s defence of its sovereignty are “so important” for tiny countries worldwide, reports Breaking News.

Noting Ukrainian children who have been kidnapped throughout the conflict, he stressed that Ireland will collaborate with other nations to guarantee responsibility for war crimes.

Ireland’s military neutrality policy prohibits it from giving Ukraine anything it describes as deadly help, including arms.

However, in addition to stabilisation and humanitarian aid, the state has contributed hundreds of millions of euros in non-lethal military assistance, reports Breaking News.

In accordance with the EU temporary protection legislation, Ireland has also welcomed almost 100,000 Ukrainians.

Mr Martin told Mr Zelensky: “We in Ireland stand with you. And we do need to say more, we do need to spend more, and we need to do more, and Ireland will contribute more financially on all fronts and in all areas, and will strengthen our commitments on that front,” reports Breaking News.

Additionally, the Taoiseach stated that it was “extremely important” that the EU expedite Ukraine’s accession to the bloc.

Ireland will continue to support sanctions on Russia and the use of frozen assets for Ukraine’s rebuilding, he stressed.

Concluding his remarks, Mr Martin said: “I think it’s very important also that we remember that Russia has not achieved the objectives that it set itself when it illegally invaded Ukraine three years ago. We need to remember that and take solace and strength from that, because the unity of the resistance has had an impact. What we must now resolve is to ensure that Russia is never rewarded for what it did three years ago,” reports Breaking News.

The meeting follows discussions on resolving the war in Ukraine between Russian and American officials in Saudi Arabia.

Since Kyiv was left out of the negotiations between Moscow and Washington, Mr. Zelensky has stated that his nation will not accept any results from the talks, reports Breaking News.
