Jim O’Callaghan, the Minister for Justice, has publicly acknowledged there are real safety concerns about the dangers that face Dublin.
Speaking to RTE, O’Callaghan admitted that “parts of Dublin are unsafe at certain times of day.” His comments were in response to a series of violent incidents, including a fatal stabbing in Dublin’s city center, which highlighted the need for enhanced policing and public safety measures. O’Callaghan emphasized the necessity for more visible garda presence, particularly at night, to counteract the “dangerous level of unprovoked and gratuitous violence” occurring in social settings.
His remarks were not isolated, he has previously noted the presence of gangs of youths “prowling Dublin city” looking for targets, indicating a perceived normalization of criminal behaviour in some areas. He advocates for Dublin to adopt policing strategies akin to other European cities, where a strong police presence is a deterrent to crime.
