Ireland’s Youth Homelessness Shame: Record Numbers of Young People Trapped in Emergency Accommodation as Crisis Hits New Lows in 2026

Ireland’s youth homelessness crisis has reached heart-breaking levels as 2026 begins. While overall homelessness hit a record 16,996 people in emergency accommodation in November 2025 (the latest detailed figures), including 5,321 children, the plight of young adults aged 18-24 is equally alarming. Focus Ireland and Department of Housing data highlight around 1,800-1,950 young people in this age group in emergency beds in recent months—up significantly year-on-year amid chronic housing shortages.

The Youth Homelessness Strategy 2023-2025 aimed to prevent and exit young people from homelessness, yet numbers continue rising due to family breakdowns, unaffordable rents (€2,300+ for Dublin one-beds), and insufficient supply. Many young Irish face couch-surfing, rough sleeping, or unstable situations not fully captured in official stats. Charities like Focus Ireland describe it as “heart-breaking,” with long-term trauma affecting education, mental health, and futures.

X overflows with stories of graduates priced out, care leavers unsupported, and families split in hotels. Billions spent on migrant hotels contrast sharply with stalled youth pilots and underfunded prevention.

This isn’t inevitable—it’s policy failure. Demand immediate action: expand supported housing for youth, restore preventive schemes, boost supply, and prioritize Irish young people before a generation is lost to the streets.
