Irish Asthma Society say 60% of patients use their inhalers incorrectly

More and more people are continuing to use their inhaler wrong according to the Irish Asthma Society.

The group who are hoping to raise awareness to over 300,000 asthma patients this week, have said over 60% of patients do not use their inhaler correctly. They also say incorrect usage can be fatal if it is not addressed in time.

The group are also encouraging GP’s and medical professionals to issue proper instructions to patients as it would cut down on the rate of attacks that claims many lives in Ireland each year.

Speaking about the incorrect usage problem CEO Averil Power issued the following advice for anyone suffering an attack: “If someone is having an asthma attack the most important thing is to stay calm.”

“So if you are around someone who has an asthma attack you get them to stay calm.”

“Get their medication for them, most people who have asthma carry a blue inhaler everywhere with the reliever medication that they take.”

“If the reliever medication doesn’t work, then you call an ambulance.”
