The Irish tally of medals has been doubled from two to four, at present they are all bronze.
Michael O’Reilly, the middleweight from Portlaoise was awarded all rounds by every judge in a strong victory over Slovenian boxer Aljaz Venko.
The boxer was given a margin of 30-27 by all three judges.
In this Friday’s semi final he will fight Russian boxer Maxim Koptyakov.
In the women’s lightweight quarter-finals Bray’s Katie Taylor beat Swedish Ida Lundblad.
The Olympic gold medalist won 40-34, 40-36, and 40-36 respectively and in the semi finals will fight
Azeri Yana Alekseeva.
Darren O’Neill, Kilkenny’s heavyweight was beaten by Ukrainian Gevorg Manukian while competing for a bronze medal.
Gevorg was awarded the first round unanimously by judges.
O’Neill was awarded the second round by two of the three judges.
Chinese judge Wang Dexin awarded the third round to Gevorg Manukian which led to a victory for the
Ukrainian.
The final decision of the fight which led to Manukian’s victory was 29-28, 29-28, and 28-29.
It is hoped that light-flyweight Brendan Irvine will upgrade to at least a silver medal in this afternoon’s semi-final while fighting Ukrainian Dmytro Zamotavev.
There have been two Irish victories out of six quarter finals so far.
