Irish citizens are to receive text alerts if they are near a terrorist attack or natural disaster

In a new plan released from the EU, Irish people are to receive text alerts if they’re near a terrorist attack or natural disaster.

The text alert is already in place in four EU countries – the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium and Lithuania.

The Irish Government will be asked to work with mobile phone providers to bring in the new system, in other words allow them to text the public.

It’s understood that the plan will replace the traditional emergency siren after the European Parliament voted to introduce Reverse112 in all EU member states.

According to the Mirror, Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune said the move “represents a great step forward”.

She added: “In a large emergency people will receive information directly on their phone about what is happening and how to remain safe.”
