Irish gov support EU plans to sanction Russian oil in act of economic warfare

The European Commission is preparing an embargo on Russian oil as part of a new round of sanctions against Moscow over its military intervention in Ukraine.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has said the EU’s executive is working out the details of the potential embargo but that nothing has been decided yet.

The war in Ukraine as one of the main topics is one the main topics for discussion at the EU foreign affairs council meeting in Luxembourg on Monday which Coveney attended.

“Sanctions are always on the table,” the Foreign Affairs Minister told reporters as he arrived for the meeting.

“Ministers will discuss which are the further steps,” he said.

Brussels now seems bent on waging a full-scale economic war on Russia with only Hungary vowing to veto a block on Russian energy imports, which the Kremlin has demanded be paid for in Rubbles.

The Irish government, having abandoned any semblance of neutrality or nuance in its application of foreign diplomacy, with Coveney saying that the country’s position is that Russian oil should be sanctioned.
