Irish households might just have to go without turkey this Christmas, as shortage looms due to dispute

2020 is turning out to be annus horribilis for many reasons, and those looking forward to a bit of turkey with all the trimmings at Christmas might need to rethink their menu choice.

Local authorities and Ireland’s Food Safety Authority are currently deadlocked over a €1m funding allowance for veterinary officials tasked with certifying abattoirs, which means that if the money isn’t forthcoming, these slaughtering facilities wouldn’t be greenlighted, and no turkeys could be processed.

Stick with lamb this Christmas, just in case.
