Crew members on board Irish Navy vessel LÉ Róisín have rescued 375 migrants stranded in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya last night.

Sources say the vessel were called yesterday afternoon at 12.57pm, by Italian authorities who requested assistance to help rescue 139 migrants from a rubber dingy 29 nautical miles north east of the Libyan capital Tripoli.

A short time later, the vessel was once again called in to help rescue a further 236 migrants from a stranded NGO ship, the Aquarius.

A spokesperson for the Defence Forces said the migrants were provided with food, water and medical treatment once on board the vessel.
