LÉ Róisín will sail from Cork at noon today, heading towards the Mediterranean Sea on a humanitarian mission.
The craft will perform search and rescue missions in collaboration with units of the Italian naval force.
Over 8,000 people were rescued from the sea by Irish Defence Force units during 2015.
