
The Irish Navy vessel LÉ Samuel Beckett, currently on station around the Mediterranean Sea, participated in the rescue operations that led to almost 2,000 being saved from treacherous waters today.
In total, Irish craft have taken part in the rescue of about 12,500 people attempting to make the perilous crossing between the North African coast and the southern coastal areas of Europe.
Over 3,000 are believed to have perished in Mediterranean waters so far this year.
