Irish peacekeepers are ‘safe’ despite missile strike – Martin says they’re remain at their post

The Tanaiste Micheal Martin says that Irish peacekeeping troops will remain in the Lebanon, for now at least.

A missile hit Camp Shamrock, the camp for hundreds of Irish troops in Lebanon, reports RTE.

Speaking in Athlone, the Irish Defence Forces Chief of Staff acknowledged the occurrence.

There are hundreds of Irish peacekeepers stationed at Camp Shamrock, reports RTE.

It is located adjacent to cities and villages that are either under the authority of or supportive of the militant organisation Hezbollah, and it is around 7 km from the Israeli border.

Lieutenant General Sean Clancy said: “It was our assessment, [that the rocket was] traveling from north to south into Israel. A lot of these are undirected, unguided and therefore unpredictable rockets, and they have been known to fall out, being taken down by the iron dome. It did fall in an unoccupied area of the actual camp itself and caused minimal, minimal damage on the ground,” reports RTE.

All Irish personnel are safe and healthy, he added.

It was a Katusha rocket, manufactured in Russia.

Throughout the night, Taoiseach Simon Harris received updates on the circumstances at Camp Shamrock.

In a statement he said: “Thankfully everyone is safe but it is completely unacceptable that this happened. Peacekeepers are protected under international law and the onus is on all sides to ensure that protection. We continue to monitor the situation closely,” reports RTE.

He added: “This is an extremely serious situation,” reports RTE.
