The Irish eat more fruit and vegetables than anyone else in the EU.
The discovery was revealed this morning by the Department of Health and will go a long way in easing people’s consciences after a day of partying and bingeing yesterday.
The Health At A Glance: Europe 2022 report was produced by researchers from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
It showed that in all EU Member States only 12% of adults consume the recommended five or more servings of fruit and vegetables per day.
However, 33% of adults in Ireland achieve this, with another 48% consuming one to four servings a day.
The figures are included in the latest OECD Health at a Glance 2022 report, which also highlights Ireland’s progress in reducing smoking rates over the past decade.
Smoking rates in Ireland have fallen by eight percentage points from 24% in 2010.
This is the second biggest drop in EU countries, after Estonia, which saw its smoking rates fall from 27% in 2010 to 18% in 2020.
The report also commends Ireland’s swift implementation of the COVID-19 vaccination programme, which is estimated to have reduced deaths by 70%.
