Two Irish holidaymakers are recovering after being violently assaulted while vacationing in Italy, reports The Mirror.
One of the victims sustained a fractured jaw during the assaults, which occurred in Palermo, Sicily, according to police.
Authorities believe the two men were attacked separately but within a short timeframe and in the same vicinity, reports The Mirror.
They reported that the assaults were carried out by a group of North African youths late last week, though the information is only now coming to light.
The incidents took place in the Vucciria district, near Palermo’s port area, reports The Mirror.
Police responded quickly after bystanders alerted them, discovering one of the Irish men lying on the ground in a dazed state.
Four hours later, the second man was found in a nearby alleyway, just a few hundred meters away, reports The Mirror.
He was incoherent and had suffered a broken jaw.
Both individuals received medical attention in hospital for their injuries before being released, reports The Mirror.
It’s believed the two have since departed the island of Sicily.
The area has seen a rise in tourist-related assaults recently – with ten people reportedly targeted.
No suspects have been apprehended yet, but Italian police continue to investigate, reports The Mirror.
