On the same night Notre Dame Cathedral was tragically gutted by fire in Paris the Dome of Rock Mosque in Jerusalem also ablaze.
The fire was not as extensive or damaging to the Mosque, which is the third holiest site in Islam, as the Notre Dame fire was but a 2,000 year old section of the structure was put at serious risk.
The Wafa news agency reported that the fire was contained in the Marwani Prayer Room which is also known as ‘Solomon’s Stables’.
It is thought that the historic portion of what was originally the Jewish Solomon’s Temple was built by King Herod, who ruled Judea as a puppet of the Roman Empire at the time of the birth of Jesus Christ.
In recent decades since the creation of the State of Israel the Temple Mount or ‘Haram esh-Sharif’ as it is known by Muslims has been the site of renewed tensions as some Jews seek to remove the mosque and rebuilt the original Solomon’s Temple.
The entire area is covered in sites supremely sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims.
