The Italian island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean is struggling to cope as a new boat full of migrants from Africa lands on island on average once an hour.
Die Welt reports that the Mayor of Lampedusa is threatening to declare a state of emergency on the island if Rome does not intervene to help.
The Mayor told the German paper:
“The situation has become uncontrollable. If the government doesn’t, I’ll declare a state of emergency.”
Large number of Sub-Saharan African migrants continue to arrive on the island from Tunisia and also from war torn Libya.
As the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean to Italian shores once against begins the increase, authorities are increasingly concerned that those travelling from Africa could be carrying the Covid-19 virus which was brought under control in Italy following one of the worst outbreaks in Europe.
