Italian police have busted a child sex abuse cult that has been operating in the country since the 1980s.

The cult was said to be led but by a 77-year-old man, whose identity has not yet be revealed, and is said to have practiced the sexual abuse and torture of its female members and children under its control.

Italy’s La Stampa newspaper reported cult’s followers lured their victims to join by promising to show them a “fantastic and secret world” as well as the light of “the inner fire” and following joining the cult victims were forced to separate from friends and families and subject to psychological manipulation.

Members of the cult would become emotionally and finically depended on the cult and its leader whom they referred to as “The Doctor”.

Despite the cult operating for over three decades police found it exceptionally difficult to infiltrate the group as its followers showed extreme loyalty due to psychological manipulation they endured.

The cult financed itself by running several shops, a psychology centre, and even a publishing house while also recruiting members from wealthy families and requiring large donations from them after they engaged in the sex abuse practices.
