The High Court has appointed a receiver to recover unpaid fines from Enoch Burke’s salary, which now total nearly €80,000. These fines were imposed after Mr. Burke continued to attend Wilson’s Hospital School in defiance of a court injunction. Despite the penalties, he has not made any payments and remains on fully paid administrative leave while appealing his dismissal from the school.
During the hearing, the court also granted an order to freeze Mr. Burke’s bank account to facilitate the recovery of the owed amount. Counsel for the Attorney General argued that the State, as Mr. Burke’s paymaster, has the right to deduct the fines directly from his salary. RTÉ reports that Mr. Burke had previously refused to disclose details about his assets and income to the court.
The case also saw interruptions from Mr. Burke’s brother, Isaac Burke, who was briefly held in contempt of court for attempting to disrupt proceedings. According to RTÉ, the judge warned him and another member of the public about their conduct during the hearing. The case is set to return to court next week, giving Mr. Burke an opportunity to contest the garnishee order conditionally granted by the judge.
