There have been mixed reactions on social media to Sinn Fein declaring that they wouldn’t be taking a pay bonus. Many people are saying that it’s a pure “publicity stunt” while others say why did they feel the need to publicise it, why didn’t they just do it.
Sinn Fein TD’s Mary Lou McDonald and Pearse Doherty have both confirmed that they will be not be taking their pay increase even though they were approved last week.
In an announcement on Twitter, Sinn Fein party leader McDonald said: “Now is NOT the time for pay increases for politicians. Families and workers are struggling.”
“Today I return the latest pay increase awarded to TDs”
Meanwhile Doherty also tweeted: “Another pay increase for TD’s – Now is NOT the time for pay increases for politicians.”
“Families and workers are struggling. Today I return the latest pay increase awarded to TDs.”
It is understood that both McDonald and Doherty were expected to receive in the region of €1,000 as part of the 2% increase for Civil Servants under the pay restoration scheme.
