It’s ‘not policy’ to repurpose sites such as nursing homes for refugees, says Varadkar

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has maintained that converting buildings into dorms or nursing homes for evacuees or asylum seekers is against government policy, reports Breaking News.

Properties intended for hosting refugees or asylum seekers, or properties suspected of being used for such purposes, have been the target of many suspected arson attempts in recent months.

In the most recent occurrence, gardaí are looking into a Tuesday night attempt at criminal damage by fire at a home in Lanesborough, County Longford.

Speaking in Galway on Friday night, the Taoiseach said: “It’s not our policy to repurpose student accommodation or nursing homes for example for accommodation for people seeking international protection or Ukrainians,” reports Breaking News.

“There may be limited circumstances where that makes sense, where it has been out of use for a period of time, or replaces what is being built but generally speaking we don’t want to see student accommodation being repurposed for that purpose or nursing homes,” he added, reports Breaking News.
