“It’s time for him to go” – GRA are going to ballot members on confidence in Drew Harris

Members of the Garda Representatives Association will vote on whether they trust Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, reports RTE.

The association represents around 12,000 rank and file gardaí.

The decision to no confidence in the commissioner was made at the GRA Central Executive Committee meeting this afternoon.

The vote will take place in six weeks and the outcome will be discussed at a special delegate conference before November 6.

The GRA said 71 people have resigned this year under the leadership of Commissioner Harris and there is a morale, recruitment and retention crisis, reports RTE.

With 116 Gardaí on hold, the GRA is also dissatisfied with discipline and says excessive bureaucracy is turning investigators into administrators.

Ronan Slevin, the association’s interim general secretary, said persistent issues had been identified with the commissioner.

However, Mr Slevin said Mr Harris had failed to address these issues and the GRA had no choice but to vote for members, reports RTE.

The association stressed that it had not incited industrial action or recall of workers and therefore had not violated the Garda Síochána Act.

There was no comment from Garda headquarters regarding the GRA announcement.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee said she had full confidence in the commissioner, reports RTE.
