Tom and Molly Martens have reportedly been offered a plea deal to avoid a retrial.

The pair were convicted of bludgeoning Limerick man Jason Corbett to death as he slept at his home in North Carolina on August 2, 2015. His two children were in another room in the house as this happened.

The Martens were charged with second-degree murder and sentenced to between 20-25 years in jail each. But recently, they won a legal challenge to their original trial and were granted a retrial.

The plea deal means that the killer pair have now been offered a manslaughter charge in exchange for not going through another trial. If they accept the deal, their sentence might be reduced to 80-104 months in jail, but since they’ve already served 44 months, they might be released within a relatively short period of time, and they might also be able to be out on bail within weeks.

The Corbett family is said to be ‘devastated’ at the news.
