John Lennon killer apologises to Yoko 40 years after murder

The killer of John Lennon has made a public apology to his widow Yoko Ono, 40 years after he gunned down the iconic songwriter.

Mark Chapman told a parole board that he had murdered the Beatles star for ‘glory’ in an ‘extremely selfish act’. In 1980 he shot John Lennon four times outside the singer’s Manhattan apartment. He also conceded he would likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.

In previous statements the 65 year old, who has 25 at the time of the murder, has cited JD Salinger’s cult novel ‘the Catcher in the Rye’ as an inspiration for his crime. The 1951 classic features themes of alienation and hypocrisy.

John Lennon, who was just 40 at the time of his death, was survived by his wife Yoko and their two sons. The Liverpool born star is today remembered as one of the most influential and celebrated rock and pop artists of the last century.
