Judge approves €15,000 settlement for child allegedly mistreated at crèche in Dublin

A Judge has approved a €15,000 settlement for a child who was allegedly mistreated at the Hyde & Seek crèche in Dublin. The case stems from a 2019 RTÉ Prime Time documentary, Crèches – Behind Closed Doors, which exposed serious lapses in care at the facility. The documentary revealed instances of children being mishandled, shouted at, and subjected to poor hygiene standards. Staff were also recorded watering down milk and feeding children nutritionally inadequate food.

The child, Pia Mulligan, now almost eight years old, sued the crèche owners through her mother, Cora Mulligan. According to RTÉ, the lawsuit detailed incidents such as Pia being moved to a room outside her age group, in breach of TUSLA guidelines, and sustaining a bite mark on her face from another child. Her mother also reported finding red marks on Pia’s back and witnessing overcrowded conditions with insufficient staff supervision.

The settlement includes a €17,000 contribution toward legal costs. The judge acknowledged the challenges in proving the case but approved the settlement, noting the distress caused to both the child and her mother. This case highlights the ongoing impact of the RTÉ investigation, which brought to light systemic issues in childcare practices at the Hyde & Seek crèche.
