Justice Minister confirms that ruling which prevents citizenship applicants from leaving the country is under review




The Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan has confirmed that confirmed that a recent High Court decision ruling that states anyone who wishes to become a naturalised citizen must have a year’s unbroken residence – is under review.

According to RTÉ News, the Department of Justice have confirmed that it is reviewing the ruling after it cause widespread concern amongst those hoping to gain citizenship.

It is understood that last weeks ruling has caused concern after it stated that a person wishing to obtain citizenship must remain within the country for a whole year before their application hearing.

Although the Minister for Justice has confirmed that the judgment is being reviewed in consultation with the Attorney General’s office, it is believed that the ruling could cause potential issues for some wishing to obtain citizenship as the law doesn’t allow an applicant to leave the country for any period of time including holidays or work related issues.

Speaking in Helsinki, Flanagan said the issue is a priority and of the upmost concern and he hopes that it can be resolved immediately.
