Katie Taylor’s bid for sixth world championship crown ends after narrow defeat this afternoon

There was bad news for Irish boxing fans this afternoon as Katie Taylor failed in her bid to win sixth world championship crown.

The Bray native who secured her place at the Rio Olympics earlier this week failed to claimed the coveted crown after she was beaten by France’s Estelle Mossely in the semi-finals in Astana today.

Taylor who will still collect a bronze medal for her amazing championship run faced a tougher fight against the French woman this afternoon although she did not go out without a whimper as she took the first round in the grueling bout.

However Taylor’s good start was cancelled out in the second round as Mossely got the decision on two of the cards after an impressive display. The arduous battle stemmed to take it’s toll in the third round as Taylor became fatigued as the Frenchwoman upped the anti and connected with a series of powerful shots, although amazingly the Irish Olympic champion recovered to ultimately take the round.

The final round was to be Katie’s downfall as the frenchwoman finished strongly to nick the decision at the death.
