Members of parliament in the ex-Soviet republic of Kazakhstan have passed an amendment to the country’s criminal code to allow for the chemical castration of convicted child molesters.
According to a parliamentary spokesperson, the castration procedure would be ‘temporary’. The subject would receive a ‘one-time injection’ to prevent them from committing further acts of sexual violence, and the decision to carry out the procedure would require court and medical approval.
The measure has been taken on foot of a marked spike in crimes of a sexual nature against children in the Republic of Kazakhstan, with almost 1,000 such incidents reported between 2010 and 2014.
