Keeping elephants in captivity in zoos or safari parks will soon be banned in the UK

Keeping elephants in captivity in zoos or safari parks will soon be banned in the UK.

The move comes after a new report advising the British Government that elephants suffer from mental illnesses when in captivity, and also serious diseases like arthritis.

In the wild, elephants live up to 50 years, but their lifespan while in captivity is around 17.

There currently are 51 elephants in zoos or safari parks across the UK. It is understood that when these animals die, they will not be replaced.
