Kelly: “Irish Water needs to stay as it is a ‘necessity’ for the country

With Government talks resuming today and with the main sticking point being the ever protracted debate of Irish Water, Labour Minister Alan Kelly has weighed in with his opinion by stating the much hated utility is “a necessity” for the country.

The acting Minister for the Environment, who was part of the coalition that introduced the highly opposed charges made his comments whilst he was speaking at an event in New York to commemorate the 1916 Rising. Although Mr Kelly refused to comment on negotiations around the potential scrapping of water charges.

Mr Kelly told reporters: “It’s all speculation at the moment.” “I will reserve judgment until what’s been proposed,” he said. “I certainly believe there is a necessity for Irish Water. The country needs it.”
